Jerez Test: Massa sets the pace

Felipe Massa set the pace on the opening day of the Jerez test.

The Ferrari driver was never threatened for the top spot as he set a fastest time of 1’20’’709 at the wheel of the F150th Italia. He ended the session ahead of Sauber’s rookie Sergio Perez and Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

Daniel Ricciardo didn’t lap this afternoon, having handed the wheel over to Jaime Alguersuari, but still retained fourth spot. Lewis Hamilton was fifth fastest on this first day of running of the new McLaren MP4-26.

All the teams worked on their 2011 cars today and they ran pretty much faultlessly… apart from the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. The German stopped on track twice this afternoon. Meanwhile, Vitaly Petrov ran wide on the first corner and ended in the gravel trap.

Mark Webber got a bit angry with Sergio Perez at the end of the session as he was slowed down by the Mexican.

Pastor Maldonado’s day was spoiled by a mechanical problem on his adjustable rear wing.
