Jerez Test: Schumacher tops day two

Michael Schumacher ended the second day of Jerez testing on top.

His morning’s fastest lap time was not challenged in the afternoon and he remained ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Jenson Button moved up one place and ended the day third fastest. Jaime Alguersuari was fourth fastest for Toro Rosso. Red Bull’s Mark Webber completed the top five.

If the morning was relatively quiet, the afternoon was more eventful. At around 3pm, Sergio Perez went off at Turn 8 and significantly damaged the front-end of his Sauber C30. The session had to be stopped for fifteen minutes.

Shortly after it had restarted, new boy Pastor Maldonado crashed his Williams FW33 at Turn 4. The team’s mechanics are in for a busy night as the car is badly damaged. Rubens Barrichello is due to drive tomorrow. Earlier in the day, the team had already lost some valuable track time as it had to change its KERS’ batteries.

In the Lotus garage, Jarno Trulli’s day ended prematurely with a mechanical problem. New parts are to be shipped from the factory.

Testing will continue this weekend. All eyes will be on Lotus Renault GP and Nick Heidfeld tomorrow. The German will be at the wheel of the R31 for a day and a half, as the team will assess him as a potential replacement for the injured Robert Kubica.
